Ghana’s 2022 FIFA World Cup journey terminated prematurely as they lost to Uruguay by 2goals to zero at the Al Janoub sports stadium on Friday afternoon.

Coming into the tie with a revenge mission memtality, the Black Stars failed to make it count as they were edge out by Uruguay, conceding twice in the first half.

Coach Otto Addo made few changes to the side that defeated South Korea in their second group game, bringing in Alidu Seidu and Baba Rahman for Gideon Mensah and Tariq Lamptey.

Ghana’s glorious chance came in the 21st minutes when Mohammed Kudus was brought down in the penalty box but skipper of the side, Andre Ayew was denied by Uruguayan shot-stopper with his left footed spotkick being saved.

Uruguay capitalised on Ghana’s penalty miss to pile more pressure which resulted in a goal in the minutes courtesy De Arrascaeta.
Luiz Suarez’s was denied by Lawrence Ati Zigi but De Arrascaeta was there to head home to put Diego Alonso’s side ahead.

De Arrascaeta grabbed the second for Uruguay in the 32nd minute, pouncing on Luiz Suarez’s pass to put a shot past Ghana’s goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi.

Back from recess Otto Addo made two quick changes with the introduction of Osman Bukari and Kamaldeen Sulemana for the Ayew brothers, Andre and Jordan.

Uruguayan shot-stopper Sergio Rochet was the saviour of the day, denying Mohammed Kudus on multiple occasions on what could have resulted in goals for the Ajax midfielder.

Daniel Kofi Kyere, Antoine Semenyo and Abdul Fataw Ishahaku were later brought on to help salvage a point for the former African champions but failed to penetrate the Uruguayan defence.

The result meant that both sides will bow out of the 2022 FIFA World Cup as South Korea came second after beating Portugal in the dying embers of the game.
