The Magpies took on the Saints in the first leg of clash of the EFL Cup at the Saint Mary’s Stadium.
Both Southampton and Newcastle came into this match on the back of 2-0 victories over Manchester City and Leicester City respectively.
With Newcastle dominating the first half, they always looked likely to score in the half but it was still goaless at halftime.
The second half began with chances coming for both sides as both sides pushed each other for the opener.
Joelinton came close to giving Newcastle the lead but missed from point blank range.
The Magpies finally found the opener through Joelinton with a similar chance which he buried the ball in the net.
Less than 5 matches later, Adam Armstrong put the ball in the net to level for the Saints but their joy was short lived as the goal was chopped for handball through a VAR intervention.
With the game nearing its end, Dujé Çaleta-Car was given the matching others as he received a second booking of the game.
Newcastle now have a slender advantage going into the second leg tie at St James’ Park.
