FC Samartex Striker Isaac Opoku Agyeman has expressed his disappointment over missed opportunities due to the ban imposed on him by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for alleged involvement in match-fixing.
According to the former Ashanti Gold player, he secured a deal with Serbian club Partizan Belgrade in 2021 but the GFA refused to release his International Transfer Certificate (ITC), ultimately jeopardizing his lucrative opportunity.
“It is good we have been exonerated but it is not good news for me. In 2021, I had a foreign deal in Serbia and signed for Partizan Belgrade but the GFA refused to release my ITC. The deal would have fetched me $5,000 a month as salary.” Isaac Opoku Agyeman told Oyerepa Sports
The alleged match-fixing investigations involved Inter Allies Football Club and Ashanti Gold Sporting Club, leading to the GFA imposing bans on several players. In 2022, an appeal was lodged by FIFPro to CAS on behalf of 21 footballers banned by the GFA for their alleged roles in the match-fixing.
The recent ruling by the Court of Arbitration for sport (CAS) has vindicated the players, exonerating them from the allegations and overturning the GFA’s sanctions. The Swiss-based court also ordered the GFA to compensate the affected players with 6,300 Swiss Francs.
The players can now resume their footballing careers without the shadow of match-fixing accusations looming over them.
