Medeama Club president Moses Armah has called upon the government for support to excel in the 2023/24 CAF Champions League rather than merely participating.
Medeama recently made history as the first Ghanaian club since 2012 to qualify for the group stage of this continental competition, defeating Guinean side Horoya 4-3 on aggregate. Despite a 2-1 loss in Conakry, their initial 3-1 triumph at the Cape Coast Stadium proved crucial in securing their advancement.
Medeama SC last reached the CAF Confederations Cup group stages in 2016, but they could not advance beyond the group stage, finishing third in Group A.
Moses Armah, speaking at a press conference on Monday, stressed the team’s desire to go beyond mere participation.
“We don’t want to be mere participants in this competition; that’s why we’re calling on the government and corporate Ghana for support,” he stated.
Armah explained that their experience in CAF club competitions has revealed the substantial financial commitment required, with each game costing approximately $150,000.
Medeama will discover their opponents for the group stages on Friday, October 6th, when the CAF Champions league draw is held in Johannesburg, South Africa.
