Otto Addo Explains Andre Ayew's Omission from Black Stars Squad

Ghana coach Otto Addo has addressed the surprise exclusion of veteran attacker Andre Ayew from the Black Stars squad for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Mali and Central African Republic.

While declining to reveal the specifics of their private conversation, Otto Addo confirmed, “I had a long talk with Andre and gave him the reason why he isn’t in the squad. I talk directly to players and don’t discuss these conversations publicly.”

Addo emphasized the team’s decision, acknowledging Ayew’s potential disagreement: “This is the decision we took, and it is not like he necessarily agreed, but I still have big respect for him.”

Ayew, a stalwart of the Black Stars since his debut in 2007, boasts an impressive 124 appearances and 24 goals for Ghana. His absence raises questions, particularly considering his decent season with French Ligue 1 side Le Havre. The 37-year-old scored 6 goals in 20 appearances across all competitions this season.

The Black Stars will be looking to bounce back after a stuttering start to their qualifying campaign. They secured a win against Madagascar but were defeated by Comoros, leaving them in fourth place in Group I with just 3 points.

Ghana will face Mali away on June 6 before returning home to take on Central African Republic at the Baba Yara Stadium on June 10.
