Black Meteors Gaffer Ibrahim Tanko has set his sights on qualifying the country for the Olympic Games in Paris 2024 following the country’s qualification to the final round of the u-23 2023 Afcon qualifiers with a 4-1 aggregate over Mozambique.
Ghana will now face Democratic Republic of Congo in the final phase of the qualifying series in their bid to qualify for the group stages of the U-23 2023 AFCON in Morocco commencing in June.
The country’s last qualification to the Olympics was in 2004 in Greece, where they exited in the first round of the tournament and have since struggled to break through ever since.
Ghana came close in the last qualifications series for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, but fell short once again losing to South Africa on penalties in the semi-finals at the Cairo Stadium.
Given the recent statistics of the Black Meteors and in their bid to break the jinx under Ibrahim Tanko, the gaffer remained optimistic of changing the narrative.
“We are happy for the win against the Junior Mambas of Mozambique and the only thing is we want qualify to the next stage of the competition. I think the boys did a great job in Maputo in the first leg before the second leg win over our opponent.
Every player who is playing actively and eligible to play will be called because we want the best for Ghana.
We are going to have a mix of both local & foreign players to make our squad a formidable one to propel us qualify for the AFCON and the Olympics 2024 in Paris”, he added.
The Black Meteors best finish at the summer Olympic games in football came in the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona clinching bronze in the third-place play-offs, beating Australia.
A feat that has proved difficult to break ever since Ghana hoisted the flag high all the way in Spain under the late Samuel Arday.
Ibrahim Tanko and his charges quest will be to re-write that narrative this time around, with qualification to the AFCON tournament in Morocco June 2023 the immediate task for the current team.
The final phase of Qaulifiers against Democratic Republic of Congo will commence next year March 2023 with the first leg in Kinshasa, then the second leg a bit later.
